I have lots of illustrations that are incomplete, abandoned, in process or waiting for who knows what. Occasionally I pull some out and add something or generally mess around with them to better achieve an idea or goal. This might be thought out or on a whim. Case in point, the two little paintings seen here had the blue added last week and the border added two days ago after lying about for months. That is a general explanation of these pictures.
In a more specific description these have several notable ideas involved in their coming to be. I am unsure of which point is more important or interesting so I will speak of them in no particular order. One, they are a diptic. I like the ideas of diptics, triptics or however many "tics" there can be. The dialogue and conversations that can arise from multiple pieces can be very informative or just interesting. The creation of something intended to work with another piece(s) is a fascinating idea. Certainly a fun one if you do like to paint. These, of course, are meant to work together. Subject matter not withstanding I feel I did achieve some sense of the diptic's essence. That is to say I do believe they work together as separate pieces of a larger expression.
A second idea that come to mind for me is the subject matter. My memory is that I made these with the idea that people would want them. I am not saying I was not interested in the samurai motif but every now and then I do consider what people might want as opposed to what I am interested in. To put it bluntly what is more marketable than my usual fair. This is also true for the size of the work. Potentially the smaller work is less intimidating or more appealing in some way. These had that intention if not that outcome. I cannot pretend to know how close I have come to this but I feel that accessibility for the viewer is high.
The final idea I have in mind is somewhat coupled with the second. In many ways these are just throw away works. The material and time spent on them are minimal. I am not sure how this idea come across. Generally speaking I have no real investment in them or their quality. There does seem to be a phenomena for me that when I am am not overly committed to a project a certain freedom come about that can be useful. For example a looser style might be used than one I usually use. I may take chances I do not usually take as I am not worried about "loosing" the work. I feel that some of my favorite work has arisen in moments where I am just goofing around. The question is, how do I make that my own choice?
